Inglewood’s The Blues Can faces closure to make way for condo project

Many in the community are sad to hear the news about The Blues Can.

It’s sad but true; Inglewood’s live-music venue The Blues Can may be saying last call this year to make way for a condo development.

According to CBC News, Blues Can owner Greg Smith says the bar will likely be in its current location until the fall, but he doesn't know what the future holds after that. The site faces a proposed development for a mixed-use, four-storey housing complex.

As CTV reports, the Blues Can has been a favourite spot for Calgary music aficionados and a prized venue for musicians looking to hone their chops in an intimate barroom setting. Calgary musician Tom Phillips has a regular gig at the Blues Can and says there are few places in the world like it.

There’s been no city decision yet on the proposal.

THE CALGARY GUIDE

Calling all pizza lovers: Check out these YYC spots

Inglewood Pizza is a personal favourite of our managing editor’s. Yum! // Instagram

There’s nothing better than a fresh slice of pizza and lucky for Calgarians, there’s no shortage of spots to grab a slice. From the crispiness of the crust to the taste of the cheese to the creative combination of toppings, it’s safe to say there’s a lot to love about pizza. Here are some of our favourite spots to find some delicious ’Za.

Inglewood Pizza: This pizza joint has two city locations (Inglewood and Killarney) and has been serving its cheesy slices to the community since 1994. The shop’s many accolades include best gluten-free dough and an award-winning rendition of pineapple and ham pizza.

Blaze Pizza: With three locations to choose from, Blaze Pizza only uses house-made dough and offers five specialty crusts with more than 40 toppings to choose from. Then, this pie is fast-fired at extreme heat in the oven. Yum!

LDV Pizza Bar: LDV stands for La Dolce Vita, which is Italian for “the sweet life”. Located in Bridgeland, LDV features thin-crust pizza baked in an imported wood-burning oven. I recommend the Pizza Jeremiah with a side of Italian fries.

Noble Pie Pizza: It’s all about the crust with this simple, real Brooklyn-style pizza. Noble’s Beltline location is just as awesome and makes a great date night, but you better get there early as it gets busy.

Atlas Pizza & Sportsbar: Atlas is a friendly neighbourhood pub in the city’s northeast that is one of Calgary’s longest-serving since it opened in 1975. The thick toppings are worth the drive.
