“I know how to get under her skin”: Former mayor Naheed Nenshi is running for NDP leadership

Nenshi, 52, was elected mayor of Calgary in 2010 and won three terms before he decided not to run again in 2021.

Former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi made a splashy announcement on Monday as he announced he’s coming out of retirement to run for Alberta's NDP leadership to challenge what he termed an “immoral” United Conservative government.

As CTV reports, Nenshi said in his announcement: "I've known Danielle Smith for 30 years. The woman who is the premier now is not the woman I grew up with. She's something else. She is devoid of doing what is right for the people of Alberta. I know how to get under her skin."

In an interview with CBC News, Nenshi said he was entering the race based on his concerns that the Alberta government is not only incompetent, but “they're actually immoral and they're dangerous”, pointing to the health care system as a prime example.

Since Notley announced she is stepping down, five candidates have thrown their names into the ring for NDP leader.
